After having had impressive success teaching reading improvement courses in the past, I'm looking to add sustained silent reading to my current English 2 curriculum. The benefits of reading are varied and impressive.
When my non-reading students become readers they gain confidence. They gain the confidence to read texts: not just books they like, but articles and novels and speeches assigned to them in English class. They become confident in dedicating their attention to something: not just reading, but class content, and not just MY class content. They develop the confidence to achieve difficult tasks: most of them believed finishing a book on their own was impossible.
But, students are most motivated to become readers when they have access to books they want to read. Stories that interest them. Characters who feel familiar to them. These are vital to developing readers.
Please help me provide access to the stories and characters that will capture the hearts and minds of my students by helping me update my classroom library and provide a home for these new books (along with my old ones).
