Many of our students live in a food desert area with few available and affordable fresh food which results in a lack of healthy eating habits for the students and their families.
By understanding the nutritional value of the vegetables and fruits harvested by their own hands, students will develop a deeper appreciation for fresh food and healthy nutrition.
The first phase is the creation of the Outdoor Urban Garden Classroom in which the language immersion program students will be taught through hands-on, project-based methods about seed sprouting, vegetable gardens, hydroponics, healthy nutrition, sustainability, self-responsibility, and instill an appreciation for natural resources all through the practical application of academic concepts. The tools listed in our proposal will be used by the students themselves to build raised garden beds as well as a hydroponic system.
