I have found that my students respond well to books that speak to things they love even if the characters come from different places and have different experiences. Sometimes it is hard to find novels at my students' interest level, at their skill level, and that still cover all of our standards. The Crossover by Kwame Alexander is that book. It combines basketball, adolescence, and poetry. It will speak to my students who struggle to read as well as to those who gobble books up like candy.
The Crossover will show my students that poetry is for everyone. They will use the text to understand figurative language and word choice and as a model for their own writing. I am so excited to bring them a contemporary work that will foster a new appreciation of language.
