Since I started working at Irving ISD in 2017, I have worked with at-risk students who have never passed a Reading STAAR test. Reading old, dead white guys is in no way appealing to them--the only times they get excited about books are if they can relate to the characters in some way, or if there is an exciting mystery to delve into.
We've read excerpts from Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, Dear Martin by Nic Stone, One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus, and Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. In reading excerpts, my students have gotten excited about reading and have asked to finish these novels in their entirety.
My hope for my students is that by offering more relatable books, they will be inspired to read more, which will make them better students and better citizens. Please help me to help my students.
