Last year, these same amazing students started a business called the Ironmen Cafe, a student-run cart run weekly where they deliver delicious pre-made drinks and treats to staff in the middle school. Students have learned important socialization, communication, and math application skills through this process. Now it's time to take their learning one step further! Cooking a meal, setting a table, making a bed..sure these skills may come easy to some but not all. My students require more than your traditional academic program. They require a life-skills based curriculum to develop functional skills as they learn more independent living skills. Operating a laundry machine will help them clean their uniforms so they can improve their hygiene and lessen the peer pressure they experience from bullying. Cooking on a stove will help them improve cooking basic meals to care for themselves as they cook for their families or as they move into their future home. Cleaning and keeping a neat living space is also a required life skill. The possibilities with this space are endless!
