My biggest goal for my students is to help them build a passion for books and reading. In my speech room, we make the books come alive: acting out the scenes, using silly voices, and truly immersing ourselves in the language. The stories we read provoke questions and share, and I watch even the most reticent student get drawn in. On close examination of my library, however, I notice the bleak lack of diversity on my bookshelf.
My children deserve to see themselves represented in print and to have a library that better represents the world around them. I hand-selected books with characters with various ethnicities, cultures, families, abilities, and identities. I specifically chose books that could be incorporated into speech and language lessons, to ensure they would be used all year long and not just during a particular theme. I hope this will help embolden my students who rarely see someone like them in media and help remind them they are loved and important. Further, I hope this will expose my students to characters that look different or have different experiences from them and help them learn that those differences are what make this world beautiful.
