Starting in March, we will be starting the novel "Peak" by Roland Smith with our 5th Graders. The novel has vocabulary specific to rock climbing as the novel is about a boy who climbs Mount Everest. We plan to spend one day kicking off the unit with rotations that will include a rock wall, setting up tents, and interacting with climbing gear to increase background knowledge and vocabulary. Some of these vocabulary words they would learn through this interactive experience would be harness, belay, cams, crampons, ascend, and descend.
We want to bring a mobile rock wall to give our students a once in a lifetime, hands on experience. The rock wall will be a focal point in a series of rotations to engage the students and deepen their understanding of the unfamiliar concepts and terminology within the novel.
This money would help cover half the cost of a 24 foot, three lane, mobile rock climbing wall for 6.5 hours. This allows the students to see the climbing tools and gear necessary for a successful climb. This type of experience is one most of our students would not get outside of this opportunity.
