The goal is to get students reading but not just reading, excited about reading and wanting more. Book Series & Collections are the vehicle. The series & collections selected are a range of genres to encourage students to step out of their norm. They were also selected in an effort to steer away from the all too comfortable format...graphic novels. Don't get me wrong graphic novels are good but some students get stuck on that band wagon and never get off it; which doesn't help their fluency, stamina, their ability to follow a story without...graphics, etc. (I'm sorry graphic novels; it's nothing personal.)
Small group in class book talks is the road! Scaffold-ed with teacher facilitation to promote student engagement. By making this a daily 15 minute rotation students will get over that hurdle of starting a new book, pushing through the unfamiliarity during the first couple chapters thus getting them invested into the characters and wanting to find out what happens next. The hook is set, we don't just have them interested in that one book; it doesn't end there... We've got them hooked on a SERIES!!! Do you feel it? What started off as teacher facilitated just became STUDENT DRIVEN!!!! A new, beautiful, inspiring habit was just born.
Goals to be achieved: Students are excited about books and want more! Mindsets are changed, confidence is booming, and students experience growth!
You are making that vision a reality with your donation. You Rock!
