Our goal is to provide this space to students who are feeling anxious, sad, angry etc. so they have a safe place to go while they process these emotions. When young children get overwhelmed, it often looks like defiance and can cause disruption in class. When a student is in an emotional state, the muscle movement needed to ride a stationary bike can bring them back into their executive state, ready to learn. Other times, when they are overwhelmed with stress, sensory tools help them manage their emotions until they are ready to problem solve.
The "Storm Shelter", or CARE room will allow them access to research based sensory activities, they will learn how to manage what they are feeling so it will not affect how they are behaving and maximum time will be spent learning.
Our goal is to impact our community to become compassionate, life long learners, which starts with an understanding of emotions. The books and tools listed will be significant in helping our youngest students in each classroom to learn how to regulate themselves rather than acting out.
