While I have recorders and a few various percussion intruments for my older and younger students, my middle school students seem to be getting left behind with little opportunity to grow with music.
I intend to use the ukeleles to introduce beginning musicians to string instruments. Not only will they be learning about note value, pitch, and rhythm; but they will also be able to apply this knowledge to a variety of instruments, including xylophones, drums, bells, and of course, ukeleles.
Ukeleles also round out the learning experience by giving the students aural, visual, and kinesthetic awareness of what is going on in the music room. It will also help teach my students about responsibility and caring for instruments.
