I believe teachers should support a community classroom that allows students to feel comfortable with themselves and others. Many topics in health education are sensitive and can trigger the stress response in the students. Focusing first on connecting with disengaged youth can elevate them to believe in their life purpose and achieve their true self-worth.
An open space classroom, combined with mindfulness and therapeutic chairs invites healing to take place which ultimately leads to increased academic achievement and connections to others in this world.
This project embraces the concepts of a modern classroom. Classroom desks will be removed, breaking down physical barriers to each other. Traditional class chairs will be replaced with therapeutic yoga chairs, allowing core development and quiet movement. The warm environment of a non-traditional classroom is a welcome place for all. Mindfulness, circle methods, movement and cooperative learning will be replaced as a core instructional practices to encourage emotional regulation, attention and heart to heart connections.
My hope is that students finish the course with a strong sense of self and the ability to succeed, new friendships, resiliency and a wider perspective of life.
