The ability to read enhances life as we know it. It allows us to access information, learn new skills and promotes independence- all of which enriches the quality of life.
It is important to expose young children to print rich environments- thus fostering an understanding, appreciation and love for reading.
Emergent literacy is a critical time in a child’s development- the building blocks of learning to read and write. It is comprehensive and complex in its presentation- oral language, phonological awareness, concept development, knowledge of the conventions of print/braille and of print/braille intentionality, alphabetic knowledge, and environmental factors.
Meaningful activities, such as print rich environments, daily literacy routines and read alouds are vital to supporting emergent literacy.
