The introduction of recorders is the most exciting time of the semester for my 3rd graders. The 3rd grade is when students begin to put their note reading skills to life by performing with their very own instruments. Students begin learning how to read music in 2nd grade to prepare them to perform pieces on the recorders in 3rd grade.
Practicing with recorders helps students with their musical notation reading. Recorders are the first step towards instrumental music where students learn that music is not just about singing but about various other musical tools that they can further use their skills of reading music.
I meet with each 3rd grade class on a weekly basis where we will be working on pieces such as "Hot Crossed Buns," "Twinkle Twinkle," and they will be asked to write their own four beat pattern which they will perform on their recorder for the class.
