This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to experience their government in action. Students will visit Washington's famous monuments, memorials, and institutions as well as meet with their Congressional delegation on Capitol Hill. Students will get a first-hand look at the American political system and have the opportunity to consider what role they, as young adults, play in our democracy. Students will have the opportunity to interact with students from all across the country.
Close Up instructors help students to consider how the people and events represented in D.C.'s memorials impact their lives today. Close Up helps students learn more about their history and government while considering a variety of viewpoints and keeping students interested, informed, and engaged as they make personal connections with famous places of the nation's capital.
Many members of this group have not traveled outside of the Grand Rapids area with the exception of visiting family. Our students are extremely interested in the current political environment and how it affects them and their families. Students are looking for ways to have their voices heard. By visiting historical sites they have studied in school, this particular travel experience will also enhance their current classroom education. Our group will have the chance to begin some real dialogue, to expand their worldview, and to sharpen their self-awareness. This is an extraordinary opportunity to see different landscapes and to listen to the opinions of people from across the U.S. This opportunity to travel can instill confidence in students as they travel away from the comforts of family, friends, and familiar surroundings.
While we hope to receive financial support from various avenues, we hope to raise a portion through Ðǿմ«Ã½.
