We need quality books to supplement and create a more comprehensive social studies unit on the history of enslavement/slavery.
Understanding of the origins, effects, and consequences of slavery would allow our students to more fully understand the uncomfortable reality of slavery and the historical significance of events which occurred and still permeate and affect our society today. A comprehensive understanding of slavery's aspects would help our students more fully understand portions of a newly-adopted language arts curriculum called Benchmark. Students begin 5th grade with a unit exploring the U.S. Constitution and asking why laws continue to evolve. The subject of slavery is explored as a prime example of something once legal which now is not. Books in this collection would show not just the historical perspective on changing laws but also deepen student understanding on the human suffering and impacts.
