The preschoolers in our special education classroom are working on learning how to play, as we provide a variety of adapted and reinforcing activities for them to engage in. The students will significantly benefit from the addition of these new toys in their classroom.
Each day, the students engage in a discovery playtime, where they engage with new toys and activities. Each student uses an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device to tell the teacher what toy they want. The classroom staff and Speech-Language Pathologist use this playtime to model core vocabulary words such as "more", "want", "go", "stop", "in", "out", "up" and "down". We model language for the students, talking about what they are doing in play. Our hope is that they will gain language, as well as play skills at this time!
An adapted switch will provide each child the opportunity to engage with these exciting toys, regardless of what their physical abilities may be. Please help me provide each child with an opportunity to communicate and play. As they say, "Play Is The Work of the Child!"
