I have found in my twenty years of being a School Counselor that children enjoy sensory materials. They gravitate towards each of my sensory stations in my office, and I have found that I am constantly having to replenish these materials on my own because they use them so much.
My school is high needs, high trauma, where many of my students come from an environment where they have not been offered the opportunity to play with toys and express themselves through play. These students want to play and want to utilize sensory objects to express how they are feeling. The use of play therapy and sensory stimulation is very gratifying for my students and makes them smile knowing that they are able to create.
