Today’s common pedagogies in education – student-centered learning and personalized learning – begins from the bottom up. That means giving students a say in how they sit, where they sit, and what they sit in or on. Research suggests that optimizing all of physical characteristics of primary classrooms improved academic performance in reading, writing, and mathematics by 16 percent.
Students feel empowered when they have choice in their learning environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed.
Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.
Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD.
Flexible seating will encourage a a more active, engaged, enthusiastic, and relaxed room of students. I want to have this option for all students in my classroom. I currently have a couple choices that i have introduced and they are very excited about. However, it is only a couple so not everyone gets choice everyday. I need more to fill my classroom and empower my students. Thank you so much for looking at my project and sharing in my student's joy!
