Our class is working on a literature unit which focuses on social issues. We are learning about empathy, bullying, feelings, motivations, and struggles through our characters. We are making connections to our own lives and thinking about how we can make the world a better place. We need more books with characters that think about their feelings and actions. We need some characters that are everyday heroes.
These characters are the role models we have been looking for. Reading these books will help us to have rich conversations about social issues. Students need practice thinking about tough things like peer pressure. Especially before they head off to middle school in the fall.
