The iPads purchased will have apps downloaded on them to allow the students to see sign language in motion. They will be able to use a sign language dictionary online. Students are currently using a paper dictionary. This paper version does not allow for the students to see the facial expression that match or the fluidity of the sign. The dictionaries are old and are out of date. The app dictionaries are updated and are able to change with the times. Sign Language changes just like our spoken language.
They will also have apps when they can see stories signed while being read aloud. This will allow for them to see more sign language. They currently have computer rotation in the classroom and they are to complete computer task. They will have to use an interpreter which does not foster independence. The apps downloaded can be used for the same purpose and will have the sign language integrated. This will allow for the students to have what they need at their level and language. This will also allow for social skills to improve as they will be able to show peers their language. Again, fostering independence with academics and with peers.
