These Scholastic magazine subscriptions will allow both my Spanish and ELD (Newcomer) students the opportunity to travel without moving their feet! Through reading, students will increase their comprehensible input of the target language, be immersed in culture, and ultimately be able to speak and write with more detail, creativity, and fluency. When learning languages, the content and quality of comprehensible input is key to increasing student comprehension and subsequent production of the language. These magazines are targeted for my students' proficiency levels, age range, and interests, and will no doubt increase student confidence and motivation to engage in the target language in new and exciting ways! I envision incorporating these materials into weekly routines of "silent sustained reading" based on student choice, collaborative discussion, as well as sources to support creative/persuasive/informative writing. The best writers are avid readers, and my students can't wait to dive in!
