Writing is a huge part of education these days, and little emphasis is placed on really learning the mechanics of writing. The physical act of writing is such a challenge for students on the spectrum or students with ADHD and other learning disorders. Some of our students may have the knowledge of letter formation, however are simply very slow. On the other hand, some students do not have the motor memory to effectively form their letters so that they are legible, but do have a lot to say and want to show what they know and to tell their story.
The use of technology in the classroom has helped these students demonstrate what they have learned and allows them to tell their story in a way that is not only motivating for them, but also in a way that allows them to have the confidence to complete their work and know that their peers and teachers can read their work. Technology allows our special needs students (e.g.; Autism, ADHD, Emotional Disturbance, Dysgraphia, etc.) to participate in class with their peers.
Our school currently is very limited in the number of computers available for use. The cart of Chromebooks is dedicated to the upper grade general education classes. We are looking for a few extra Chromebooks specifically dedicated to the special education students. They can be used daily with their Special Education Teacher, Para-Educator or Occupational Therapist. Additionally, our students are learning to use the speech to text feature and predictive text on documents when they have a difficult time with spelling. Technology these days is making it much easier for our students to thrive!
Thank you in advance for your support! We will send letters or emails from the devices to show our gratitude!
