We do a unit that focuses on understanding oppression and how our nation is founded on White, racist ideas. These novels would allow students to explore these ideas further in a book club setting. Students will be able to choose what book interests them and read it along with their peers who also chose that book. By giving students choice, we acknowledge the strength of their voice; they are more likely to be interested in participating because they got to decide what they would read. These books will help students learn how oppression functions between cultures, races, time, etc., which will allow them to dive deeper into our curriculum by making connections on their own and with their group.
How can we expect our kids to believe in themselves if the books we provide don't even feature people who look like them? Please help give our students hope!
