Due to COVID-19, each student needs their own set of supplies; however, given the circumstances that my students' families face every day, some are not able to provide these necessities for their children. For the pencils and highlighters, we will use them to search for evidence in the text that explains my students' responses to a question related to the text (RL and RI 3.1). These supplies would also help my creative and informative students plan out their writing pieces (W.3.5).
Given the collective trauma that COVID-19 brought to families, I have noticed that kids are finding a harder time coping with their feelings and dealing with internal and external stress/distress. With the mantra mats, I want to allow my kids a safe space where they can demonstrate healthy practices to improve personal health; in other words, I want them to practice being in tune with their feelings and finding healthy ways to express their stress (ME.3.1-2)(SM.3.1). With the classroom rug, as well, it would help promote reading and collaborative discussions across all subjects (SL.3.1).
The items that will encourage positive social interactions are mostly the outdoor items, like the sports balls, jump ropes, and chalk. Students will be encouraged to share and learn how to use materials with a partner or group while maintaining a safe environment (PCE.3.1). Students will also maintain a safe environment outside and inside the classroom by wearing masks.
