Why is a math camp helpful for our students? Our school is still growing our math program and have had little success in having students pass the AP exam. Studies have shown that there are far fewer Black and Latino students taking advanced mathematics compared to their Asian and White counterparts for a variety of reasons, but a central reason for this achievement gap is a lack of access and resources. One of those resources includes enrichment opportunities, much like this AP Calculus boot camp that takes place outside of school hours.
Your support would provide out students with an invaluable, immersive learning experience that takes them out of the monotony of school work and placed them in a new, diverse environment with exposure to range of mathematically talented people. Supporting our program would cover lodging, meals, a complete AP diagnostic exam, 9 review sessions led by retired math professors from UCLA and Harvey Mudd, mathematicians, and other Calculus teachers like myself, and a mock exam for students to experience the rigor of an AP Calculus testing environment. In addition to preparing students for the AP Calculus exam, what I find most invaluable about the AP Calculus camp is the rich community of learners created in pursuit of mathematical learning.
