This aquaponics system will be a long term classroom project for my students and will hopefully lead to a much larger scale system that students will build and maintain for our community. It's one thing to teach students about the nitrogen cycle, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration but it's a complete different experience when the students have to actually use their knowledge to build and maintain their own system.
I strive to build skills that students will use for their lifetimes and this project will give them the tools and knowledge to become more sustainable and science literate adults. They will learn to problem solve and think critically to maintain the system. I can't express enough how this hands on experience will change the way students feel and think about science at my school. The opportunities for further experimentation and engineering will be opened up to my students.
