Teaching mindfulness has always been a passion in our school. Our goal is to take that passion to the next level. We want to be able to create a Sensory Lab in our school in order to benefit our students and create a safe space. Allowing students the opportunity to have access to a Sensory Lab will help stimulate students as well as build positive relationships with peers.
“Sensory integration” is the link between our brains and our behavior.Every brain is different and reacts differently to various situations. A sensory room would allow a space for students to cool down and restore their day through intentional movement activities.
A Sensory Lab will benefit students who have specific needs. Students who have a difficult time with behavior management or staying on task can use the Sensory Lab in order to calm down or refocus. Also, students with poor self esteem or have a difficult time with emotional self-regulation would be able to be pulled into the Sensory Lab to work on activities that will help to develop their senses therefore maximizing student achievement.
The Sensory Lab will be for all students. Brain Breaks are important to our school and giving students the opportunity to explore different movements in the Sensory Lab will help them to refocus during the day. The Sensory Lab will also be a space where students can practice mindfulness. Students will also learn strategies to deal with different stressful situations, such as EOG testing, through mindfulness activities.
With your help, our whole school would benefit!
