Students were given a choice of what memoir they wanted to read to discuss in small groups. The items selected for this project reflect students' choices. This is a favorite unit among the students because they get some choice while reading. They get to choose a topic that interests them and discuss the book with students who were interested in the same topic.
The discussion becomes rich and can sometimes be difficult getting the students to stop talking about the book. They just want to read the whole book at once instead of pausing at each week's deadline. After students read and discuss the memoirs, they then write a well-written and crafted essay! Students get VERY excited about this!
