Sensory bins can help students with autism relax, calm down and focus and concentrate better on tasks. Fine motor skills are important to carry out activities of daily living, like feeding and dressing themselves, playing with toys, and using a pen, tablet or computer. Sometimes my students also experience sensory overload where they have difficulty focusing due to competing sensory input - they may be distracted by others in the classroom, the classroom may get too loud, they may focus on the lights, the carpet, their hands and various other things. When this happens they can benefit from a quiet area created with dividers to help calm their bodies and minds and be able to re-focus on the tasks being presented. All of these items requested will help students improve their coping and life skills.
