Our speech and language therapy sessions are often literacy-based, using books and stories to target students' individual goals. In thematic units, we will be reading these books in small groups, discussing characters, places, problems, emotions, solutions, and making personal connections.
These particular books celebrate culture and diversity, with many of these books featuring characters with similar backgrounds and experiences to those in our own school and community. Seeing ourselves in the stories we read is so powerful!
In each literacy unit, students work on their individual goals in the areas of speech (e.g., practicing saying the /s/ sound each time it comes up in the story), language (e.g., learning a particular sentence structure or summarizing a story), fluency (e.g., discussing the story using stuttering awareness strategies), pragmatics (e.g., taking turns while building background knowledge about a story).
