Three junior sections of our International Baccalaureate English Language & Literature course will be using Bryan Stevenson's memoir "Just Mercy" as the central text for our fourth quarter unit. The focus of the unit will be on race, justice, and incarceration in America. Students will study the topic through multiple genres, including the text, the film adaptation, prison poetry, gospel lyrics, famous letters from prisoners {Henry David Thoreau, Nelson Mandela, Oscar Wilde, Martin Luther King, Jr.), and the PBS documentary "College Behind Bars." Students will use selections from these texts to prepare for their individual oral exams at the end of the year.
