My students learn about computer applications and coding through the lessons in my classroom and I want to give them real-world experience in a hands-on, engaging way. I would like to use the Snap Circuit kits and Lego kits as STEM activities to motivate my students to work hard to finish their assignments. With these materials students will learn how to follow step-by-step directions to design, develop, and troubleshoot plans and structures in stages.
These kits will be set up in the classroom as a way for students who finish their assigned work to practice and expand on what they've learned, and to give them a chance to express themselves creatively while learning about design and working collaboratively. Nevada currently has 3,890 open computing jobs and my students can be the future in those careers. I want to build excitement for coding and can do that with these materials.
The NVACs for 6th-8th grade Computer Science that will be covered through these engaging, hands-on, STEM activities include: 6-8.AP.M.1, 6-8.AP.PD.5, 6-8.AP.PD.2, and 6-8.AP.PD.1.
