Students from diverse urban backgrounds can feel alienated from school math because they do not see how it relates to their diverse identities and backgrounds. School math is often presented in an abstract way that focuses on the achievements of Europeans and the ancient Greeks. Non-western perspectives on the history of math have been researched in depth over the past 20 years since the publishing of the classic book 'The Crest of the Peacock: Non-European Roots of Mathematics'. However, these ideas have not yet changed the discourse around school math that most students experience. By highlighting relevant and interesting vignettes, artifacts, and art from the multicultural history of mathematics, these posters and associated lessons will give students a positive and meaningful context in which to engage with learning mathematics in school.
