The number of students in our garden club has grown considerably since last Fall and more garden beds would allow our gardeners have a more meaningful gardening experience. At the end of last school year we had five active members. This Fall we started with twelve members and now have twenty-two members in our garden club sharing 7 small garden beds.
The donation of garden beds will allow each gardener to experience planting, maintaining and harvesting enough vegetables to take home to their families. Having a school vegetable garden helps students develop a sense of responsibility and purpose. They learn to make decisions about what they grow, how much they can grow in the available space and which plants are compatible.
The additional garden beds will also allow students to plant a larger variety of vegetables. By introducing them to new plants and vegetables; it is my hope that they will develop healthier eating habits.
