My classroom doesn’t have any class sets of novels. In order to teach a longer work of literature and discuss deeper themes, characterization, and help kids become invested in reading for a sustained period, we need books. I choose books that can be taught at various reading levels, books that I have found on audio, and books that will immediately engage 6th graders who have a call to adventure built in and ready to go.
I don’t want to hand my students books and have them bring back book reports. I want to have meaningful discussions with them about the novels, which can only happen if we’re all reading the book together. Please help!
