There’s a saying that truth travels more easily on the waters of fiction. I don’t know who said it, but my 5th grade students and I agree that not only truth travels more easily, but facts travel more easily as well.. This is the reason why I want to integrate my social studies units with historical fiction that will make the worlds of the ancient civilizations that they study more memorable. If they can connect the everyday life, politics, and humanity of the ancient Mayans to particular characters about whom they care, then they will remember the necessary facts more easily, and of course, with much more empathy and curiosity.
For those reasons, I am requesting donations towards a class set of the novel The Well of Sacrifice, by Chris Eboch. We will read and study the novel as we simultaneously study the Ancient Mayan civilization.
