Each year, my students look forward to working with clay. They ask me from the first day of school when they are going to get to build something! Every student will have a chance to create a masterpiece.
Not only does clay provide a creative, hands-on experience, it also provides the opportunity to explore different textures and work on fine motor skills. Many of our students lack the opportunities to work with art materials outside of the classroom and need such experiences to continue to develop their motor control.
Each grade will have a different lesson focus such as pinch pots for younger grades to a more complex hand-built mask for older students. All of the lessons are connected with an unfamiliar culture or historic event. My students don't work with clay outside of my art class. It is truly a once-a-year experience that they look forward to.
