Novels provide us with opportunities to see into other worlds, experiences, and cultures, and to meet characters who have the power to encourage students while at the same time enlighten them about the truths about lives they don't live.
My students need access to novels that will open their eyes to other young adults whose realities are different from their own so that they can develop empathy and respect and ultimately understand that while we may appear to have many differences, we still really truly do have much more in common.
Through reading these novels, I hope to facilitate careful, thoughtful, and candid conversations in my classroom that promote respect, empathy, and inclusion for all.
