A key vocabulary-building strategy is learning to use a dictionary, the keeper of the English language. Second-graders are learning words they've never heard before. A dictionary tells them a word's part of speech, it's pronunciation, and its various meanings.
There's nothing like having your own dictionary to be able to look up words on your own.
Since the Christmas break, students have had to learn to use a dictionary as demands for reading and writing have intensified. A dictionary will inform their writing because they will find synonyms and descriptions they had not known. The writing rubric includes proper spelling, and having a dictionary will help students' writing improve. A dictionary will empower students to spell correctly and use more vivid language.
