These books focus on issues that students deal with such as anxiety, confidence, sadness, anger, love, kindness, and fitting in. Many of them use characters that can help students to relate such as princesses, dinosaurs, reindeer, and unicorns in a non-threatening way while also adding a touch of humor.
Each year we see more and more students who struggle with maintaining a healthy body, mind, and soul and it is our job, as educators, to nurture these aspects of their lives in addition to teaching them the educational standards. Students will learn better when they feel safe and loved and that their emotions are being validated.
Each day we begin by reading one or more of these books together and try to make connections in order to help us relate to our own lives. We want students to know that the way they are feeling is normal and that their peers have similar feelings. Throughout the day we can go back and reference these things in our read to self, writing, word work, and small group times in order to help them become more permanent in their daily vocabulary.
