Although text messaging has taken the place of face-to-face conversations, one still must possess great communication skills to secure long term success in all areas of his/her life. My students will develop portfolios on controversial, historical topics, such as, but not limited to: Is Education a right or privilege? Are African Americans owed reparations? Is there a New World Order? Has Christian religion been whitewashed? The students will have to conduct extensive research on their topic and develop a portfolio. The folders will allow the students to keep track of their research and artifacts.
After completing the portfolio, the students will defend their topic to their peers. Most times, when students present to an audience they never know how well they did. From grade school, the audience has been conditioned to clap after a presentation. The camcorder, digital camera, and tripods will allow the students to record their presentations and snap pictures. The students will be able to go back and watch their videos with a partner. In the partnerships, the students will identify areas for improvement in pitch, cadence, tone, body language, appearance, posture, and positioning. The students will utilize the feedback to present again to the class or elaborate on a question that arose during the presentation.
