Students will be given the opportunity to learn about pitch through boomwhackers. Each boomwhacker is marked with its pitch. We can compare the sounds of the boomwhackers to the sounds of the same pitch on the piano. We will use boomwhackers to talk about the difference between pitched instruments and non-pitched instruments, to help make pitch even more clear. Once they have an understanding of pitch, students can combine pitch and their rhythm knowledge to then compose their own music in small groups. They will be challenged to use at least 4-5 pitches and rhythms such as quarter notes, a pair of eighth notes, half notes, rests, and even sixteenth notes to make a melody created just by them!
