The use of an extra iPad and piece of technology in the classroom offers my students to successfully travel the world and their community without feeling overwhelmed or worried about interacting in stressful situations. It also provides opportunities for students with Autism to explore a local area before we physically see the space. It reduces their stress and anxiety which in turn creates a better environment for them to explore and feel safe in an unknown area.
Having extra tech in our room provides nonverbal students access to another form of communication and all students a chance to explore their interests.
Technology offers the nonverbal students opportunities to communicate with their peers and teachers. It gives them chances to show us their interests and interactive lessons that engage nonverbal students with content and peers.
This iPad also provides high behavior students a chance to positively ask for a break when needed and go to a safe place to listen to calming music, meditation and de-escalate from an aggressive behavior. It provides more to our students with Autism than just a screen to play on.
