My third grade readers are highly engaged with nonfiction texts. They are incredibly motivated to read, particularly about topics that excite them and relate to their own personal lives. During reading workshop, my students study a variety of different books and how to understand and discuss texts at all different levels. It is evident that the conversations and thinking around their books becomes much more rich when they are reading about sports, crafts, video games, slime, and a variety of other topics.
As a veteran teacher I have learned that when students feel comfortable and safe their learning flourishes. Having cozy spots to sit in and a special chair like the teacher to share will make reading seem more fun. The cushions will allow students to spread out around the classroom in spots that are just right for them. It's very important to honor the specific needs of each child so that all students are excited to learn and feel valued. The computer chair will allow one student at a time to read to a group of classmates and promote engagement. I am constantly striving to create a classroom environment the fosters a love of reading, and I know that these materials will help support that vision.
