The students will read the book together as a class and analyze how language is used and how the main character, Xiomara, explains her life through poetic storytelling. As students analyze the text, they will also have discussions about the story and the use of language in the book. They will look at how the main character, Xiomara, matures throughout the story. The students will be able to see how their story is similar to Xiomara's story.
This unit will encourage more poetry reading and storytelling in a unique way. The daily lessons will center on analyzing the individual poems that collectively tell the story. This will culminate in a Poetry Slam at the end of the unit. Students will tell their story through poetry.
