Students in Battleboro, NC have limited access to afford nutritional foods at home. Phillips Middle School will be creating a garden club this up coming school year. This club will give scholars the opportunity to learn how to grow their own food at home.
The purpose of this club is to reduce the percentage in the amount of students that are not getting an adequate amount of food when they are outside of school. This will also teach scholars a vocational skill that can be used beyond their middle school education.
Students will be reading different passages about nutrition and look at nutritional data within their communities. Students will use the data and find the problem within their community (which will be lack of nutritious foods) using the design thinking process. Student will then create their product which would be creating a garden that will allow them to have access to healthier food options.
