Students who have experienced trauma in their lives struggle to find a safe place. Many students do not have control over what is happening to them so they will begin to act out in the one place they feel the safest, school. In order to assist students in finding some calm, I would like to create a classroom that offers options on how the students complete their work.
Allowing students to choose where they sit and what type of seating works best for them will give a sense of control that they otherwise may never get. When creating a trauma-sensitive classroom it is important to allow students the freedom of choice. Having options will give students that freedom and in return will assist in creating a calm and inviting environment for the students.
