I begin every year with a unit on culture. We learn what it is and how it impacts our interactions with others. We spend a ton of time learning about each others' cultures, life experiences and backgrounds, in order to build a tight knit community. My favorite project of the year is in this unit. I have my students create banners that represent their individual culture. They spend 3+ hours decorating their banners and sharing them with the class. I laminate each of these and hang them in our classroom for the entire year. They love it!
It is so important to celebrate the different cultures in our classroom community so that everyone feels represented. With my students spending the majority of time at home this year due to COVID-19, I need to be able to send colored pencils home so students can work on their banners and other art projects in my class. I'm a project based teacher, so art supplies are utilized constantly in my classroom. The majority of my kids don't have basic supplies at home, so being able to send these home and allow my kids to utilize their artistic abilities would be so helpful.
