The titles I have selected for this project all share two main things: they are incredibly popular YA literature, and they tell stories often untold in our society.
My goal with this project is for each student to be able to read a book where they see themselves, their identities, their struggles, and their experiences reflected in the story. I believe that providing students this opportunity is pivotal to increasing engagement in reading, as well as giving my 6th graders a feeling that they belong and are seen in this world.
In my classroom, approximately 50% of the class period is spent on independent reading, giving students ample time to read and engage with a text. This project will help maximize that time and in turn increase student reading growth, because of the wide range of diverse texts available to my classroom community. Students not only will see major improvements on their reading, but feel substantially more welcomed and included into the classroom and our educational system.
