Quality literature is the jumping off point to provide students with authentic examples of how authors put their craft into practice. The stories will be read aloud and examined closely during the writing block, allowing children the opportunity to try their hand at become an author.
These books will be used to guide, inspire, and empower young, student writers in kindergarten through second grade. Each lesson will be kicked off with a "secret" about something great writers do, followed by a story that showcases it in action. Together, the students and I will become actively engaged in creating a group piece that mimics the style and strategy discussed. Finally, students are given the chance to create their own piece, putting what they've learned into practice.
In addition to sharing this literature with my students, I plan on creating a "Mentor Text Lending Library" for the teachers in my building, where I will organize the books by key features and traits for teachers to borrow.
